Under the new constitution, the DPP should be independent of the executive but the nomination of Keriako Tobiko prompts questions from MPs
resident Mwai Kibaki swore in Keriako Tobiko as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on 20 June following an acrimonious vetting last week. Members of Parliament on the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) had accused him of corruption and conflicts of interest. Tobiko, an accomplished lawyer, denies any wrongdoing. After horse-trading between the parties and ethnic factions, the Committee confirmed Tobiko’s nomination and ignored recommendations for an investigation into the accusations that had been presented to the vetting panel.
